Unless you're making purely multi-player games, most games will involve an AI at some point.

There are lots of books on decision-making, or game theory, but I'm thinking that for most projects it's a bit much.

Why don't you just delve in and see where you strand?

Game programming is a huge topic, with many aspects. Even if you restrict yourself to AI, a lot depends upon what you are trying to do. AI is a huge field.

A while back, I read through Mat Buckland's "Programming Game AI by Example" and thought it was OK. I had found a used copy for cheap, don't know if there's a new edition or not.

Do you strictly want C++ books? There's a thread on another site that discusses many Game Programming books but the emphasis is Java: http://www.java-gaming.org/index.php/topic,23636.0.html

If you are sticking with C++ then maybe http://www.gamedev.net/index is the better forum for you. I guess you will get most of your beginners question answered there already.
