Career paths in java - electronics engineer

Hi,

I have recently got my degree in electronics engineering. I want to pursue a career in software development for both desktop and server, using java. I will be taking the SCJP 1.6 soon. I have the following queries :

1-Do employers ALWAYS prefer candidates with SCJP certificate ?

2-What kind of jobs can a SCJP get ?

3-What are the other courses, exams etc that I need to do after SCJP to be able to handle more job responsibilities ?

4-Are there any other technologies that I should learn about to make my knowledge more wholesome (and my resume better), like HTML, PHP , Linux , C#, Networking etc ?

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

1) Depends on the employer.

2) An entry level Java job.

3) You'll want to learn more Java related technologies and more fundamentals/concepts. Whether you do that via the Oracle certification track is up to you.

4) Yes. Working on some "real" project will show you can handle more. Even if that is a project you do for yourself. Similar to what students do in school.

One question: why Java? It seems like you would be better qualified for C++ or an embedded technology so you can take advantage of your electronics knowledge.

Where can i find information about "embedded technology". Are there any good websites, books etc for that. I have heard about embedded java (especially,in television and mobile). where can i get information about it ?
