Whenever I open the source code of any interface, eg Runnable,Map,Serializable etc. I find the signature as
public abstract interface

I want to know if the interfaces are abstract by default then what is the need of writting"abstract" keyword expicitly?

Its not necessary to show explicitly but they mention 'public abstract' just for user convenience

Which source are you using? When I opened my src.zip file and looked at a few interfaces, there was no mention of "abstract". They started with public interface Comparable<T> or similar.

I've just checked the JDK 1.6.0_25 source for those three interfaces and there's no abstract in the interface declaration.
