Hi, I got this link http://www.learnnowjava.com/ from a coderanch newsletter last week. I checked out the site and a couple of sample videos to learn J2EE. It looked good. I did have a question for them and I tried calling. Their 1-877 number wants me to email them, so I emailed them as well.

So far no response. Although I like the materials, I am not so sure if I want to give them my credit card details. If I can't find anybody to talk to now, I would hate to run after them to cancel my subscription a year later. Has anybody else dealt with these guys? Thanks for any info you can provide me with.

I have subscribed to them and am going through the material. I share your concern about the giving them the credit card information and will take steps to ensure that my bank is notified that the subscription is only for 1 year.

Thanks. I will do the same thing with my bank as well. On a side note (if it helps anybody else looking for reviews on this site), I like the course and it is more than worth the money for me. I am very happy I got enrolled.

I like the course as well and it is still worth the amount of money I paid. But still, i feel that I got played, what I don't appreciate on sites such these.

I have seen the learnjavanow advertisement about 3 times in JavaRanch newsletter. Each time it says 99.99$ per year, hurry up, offer ends x/x/x.
Actually this offer does not end. This 99.99$ is the price they have had for past 4 months straight with exception ~45$ once.

I have been doing the courses, for 2 weeks now. They are very good. I have no regrets. www.jpassion.com is an alternative that is worth considering.

KristJan, I bought the course for $99 for a year and the very next day, it went down to $49. So I contacted them and they said they will give me an additional year free and I took it. My other option was to cancel my original subscription (which I can do within 10 days) and subcribe again for the $49 plan.

Hopefully if they continue to add J2EE materials, it would be well worth it.

It seems like everyone is wondering this... Do they have paypal? I havent' really looked into it much, but they are interesting indeed! Would love to hear more about this, wish this was spoken about more.... Maybe it should be posted somewhere else?

I kinda want to say the "Book section" but this isn't a book technically, there is no place for "e-books" or "online material..." Where are the Ranch officers when you need them? .

I watched a couple sample videos and this looks pretty decent. Has anyone used this site recently? $99 doesn't seem too bad, but I would like to hear from someone if they thought the videos were worth while or not.

See the bottom right of the above image: the company is an AppDev reseller. For what it's worth: a few years ago the company I worked for provided AppDev courses in ASP.NET. I went through the first dozen or so modules and thought they were very good. (I never put that training to use in a significant way, but that's a whole 'nother story).

Compare the course outlines from LearnNowJava and AppDev, it looks like the training is the same:

Obviously the LearnNowJava price is far lower. I believe the reason is found in the LearnNow FAQ: with LNJ you have to pay extra for features such as sample code and hands-on exercises, whereas paying the full price to AppDev gets you the entire package. That said: even though I had access to those extra features in the ASP.NET training, I rarely used them.

Overall: if my observations are sound, then I think the LearnJavaNow package is a very good deal, and I might well subscribe myself... after spending time at the Cattle Drive (I plan to begin this week!) I have no experience with the JPassion training.

Questions about Learn Java Now (emailed them, waiting to hear back and will post response):

- Do any of the Java tutorials include developing in Eclipse?
- if I decide to keep the main $99 product, but do not want any or some of the additional tools, can I selectively get a refund for the tools I don't want?
- if I want to add additional tools in the future, how would I do that. Are the prices higher?

I had subscribed as a user at http://www.learndevnow.com/ before.
And I knew learnnowjava by the email from learndevnow.com sending to me.
I think both websites are under the same vorganization.
I paid the fee of a full year and use credit card as payment. After a year since I subscribed as a user, my account didn't expired.
Few days later I received a email from them,then I found a payment statement of learndevnow.com in my credit card bill .
The videos of theirs are good, but I was using JAVA at that time, so I send a email to them and ask for a full refund.
Later I got a email from them and got the full refund. After few days the refund appear on my statement.

Below is the content in their email:

Hello,

All our subscriptions are auto renewing. When you purchased the original
subscription you agreed to an auto renewing charge in the subscription
agreement. We do not charge a credit card without the customer agreeing to
this in our "Terms of Agreement".

Your subscription has been cancelled and your credit card refunded. The
refund may take a few days to appear on your statement.

There is a common practice when you pay by card, that there is a tick-box already ticked, so it defaults to “keep my subscription going”. I know a lot of people who are annoyed about that. I suspect it is counter-productive, that the companies garner lots of bad feeling when people find it awkward to cancel.
I once had the opposite problem, where I wanted a subscription to continue, and it was cancelled because I had a new card and the details didn’t get through properly.

I think the powers-that-be at the ranch ought to take a stand and let their sponsors know that they need to allow people to opt out of auto-renewals at subscription time and not make us jump hoops to cancel auto-renewal...I am considering subscribing to learnnowjava after learning from the newsletters, but will take my business to any other honest service provider with more upfront sales practices. Any suggestions, please?

I got a response from them today that the subscription has been lowered to $49/yr the rest of this month. Here's my question and their response about auto-renewals. The videos look good, but I don't like encouraging these bad sales practices...

3) Auto-renewal: I really do not like being forced into this auto-renewal business and usually skip any service provider that chooses to offer this without an opt-out option, but I am considering your site because it was promoted by coderanch (I trust them).
You can cancel your subscription at any time to remove the auto renewal. When you cancel the auto renewal is removed and you will retain access for the remainder of your subscription year. If you chose to renew the fee would be whatever the listed price is on our website at the time of purchase.
