Hi everyone,
I need to develop a chat application in java which should be similar to a GTalk or Yahoo messenger. Can any one guide me the way to accomplish this.

You may download Skype' opensource code and build on top of it as required.

Welcome to the Ranch.

Have you listed down what all features you require in this chat application? It is always a good idea to start with what one needs to build and then think about how to go about building it.

Start with a whiteboard or BIG sheet of paper and start diagramming the various entities that will be involved and the pathways they will use to exchange data.

You don't have to be as formal as UML - the Unified Modeling Language, but getting the entities diagrammed out will be a big help.

Actually i need to build an instant messenger for my web site where users can communicate each other. How can i accomplish that. Is using XMPP/Jabber a better option?
If so can anyone guide me in that concern.

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
