Need help...have recently started learning java....please let me know the basic difference between using command prompt and netbeans for coding....which is beneficial???

When you are starting, you should use the command line for compiling/running. You'll learn a heck of a lot more.

Using an IDE hides much of the details, and you'll get in trouble later. Further, you spend time learning the IDE and not java.

I use a text editor that does syntax highlight, indentation, bracket matching, etc., but you can do everything in vi if you want.

wordpad can be used, but you need to be sure you save your files without the '.txt' it like to stick on the filename, and save them as plaintext.

I agree with Fred. I would suggest you try Notepad2, Notepad++ and jEdit as editors. Set up their automatic indentation, bracket and syntax highlighting, and automatic conversion of tab to 4 spaces options, and that will make well-formatted code easier to achieve.
