When you are starting,
you should use the command line for compiling/running. You'll learn a heck of a lot more.
Using an
IDE hides much of the details, and you'll get in trouble later. Further, you spend time learning the IDE and not
java.
I use a text editor that does syntax highlight, indentation, bracket matching, etc., but you can do everything in vi if you want.
wordpad can be used, but you need to be sure you save your files without the '.txt' it like to stick on the filename, and save them as plaintext.
There are only two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors
