I'm trying to build a web service. How would I create XSD files from scratch?

1. SOAP or RESTful architecture web service?
2. Have you picked out a toolkit to use or are you going to reinvent the wheel?
3. What kind of service/resource are you exposing to clients?

I would like to have a SOAP web service written in Java.

I haven't picked out a toolkit yet.

A web service where a client sends information pertaining to some merchandise that they want sold in a store.

I suggest you pick a toolkit and work through some examples - it should then become clear how to proceed with defining your custom web service.

Browsing through some of the recent discussions on this forum and the WebServices FAQ should help you locate tools.
