Duke dollars (as implemented in the Jive forum; you can see it at http://forum.java.sun.com ) or points (as implemented in the http://www.codeguru.com forums)

Obviously administering dollars is a PITA (and there was a lot of cheating when using dollars - for instance, creating empty threads and creating empty identities just for getting the initial 25 dollars), but leave it to the administrators of the forums...

There are a lot of business rules related to duke dollars (for instance, you receive 25 duke dollars when registering, you can assign 5 dollars to a topic, there are no negative amounts of dollars, you can remove dollars from a topic if no one answers, you receive 5 dollars just for logging in the previous month etc.)

wondering what the motivational value of handoffs like duke dollars are ?
Any one who actually offered some or obtained some who can comment ?
If the motivational value is less, are there other ways in which it can be
made more motivational ?

Well, you can use it to make "promotions", or maybe give some gift to users whose most helped in the month, like ".. every user with more than 1000 duke dollars will win a xxxx gift", for example.

Has/is this being worked on? If so, is there anything available now?

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
