Maybe this has been already says but to be able to organize forums into categories and to be able to open/close categories, would be great.

I think he may be talking about the PhPBB style of being able to click on a category in the forum index page and have just the forums in that category displayed. For example, if you have a full display of:



Clicking on Cat2 would give you:



FWIW, this is not a core code thing but can be done fairly easily in the Templates using CSS and Javascript. There is a posting around about who to do this.
