Go into the Admin Console, click on "Users" in the left menu, then click on "Groups." That will show all of the groups, and the highlighted ones are the ones that user is a member of.

You can check group settings by clicking on "Groups" then on "Permissions" in the Admin Console.

If you want to do this from code, just check the tables jforum_groups and jforum_user_groups

For the first, go to Admin Panel -> Forums -> Edit and select "Moderated". This way, any new message will need to be approved first.

I'm not sure if I understood your second question. In JForum, after the user logs in, it is automacally redirected to the page he came from. You want to change this behavior?
