Hi,
I am into java for the past 8+ years. Given my 9 yrs of IT experience, I get job offers for management/ tech lead. But I am more oriented towards java development and designing. Could anyone list me good companies (CMM level 5 or higher) which doesnt force employees to take up managerial roles? My location is hyderabad india.

Thanks,
Latha

Welcome to the Ranch.

Your question is going to be a difficult to answer as company specific discussions are not allowed. Hard luck.

...I get job offers for management/ tech lead...

I am a bit confused over this. How can you get an offer without interviewing? And if you know the position you are interviewing for is not what you are looking for, why interview?
If you are looking for active development and design, I think Architect role would be the one you are looking for.

You have to be careful with that though and ask specifically about the culture. In many places, "architects" use Visio and Word more than anything else; they'll be lucky if they can program even one class in a month. On the better teams, you'll find the architect intimately involved in the day-to-day development work whereas the other places will have them sitting in an ivory tower throwing their architecture documents over the wall to the lowly developers. One very successful group in my current company requires architects to actively write code at least a few days a week.

This is a new one for me. All the architects I have know have been hard core techie guys who love getting their hands dirty with actual framework coding. The others with Visio and Word and PPT are called managers.

You can also become an independent consultant/contractor to go from project to project and company to company.

Count yourself lucky then In a lot of places I've worked as a consultant (i.e. code monkey), "architect" just means that you've gone as high as the Peter Principle predicts you will in the technical ladder.

I did mention that there was a group in my company that had real architects. My point to the OP was just to make sure to ask about the culture. Do they have a culture where real architects do actual development work or one that puts them in ivory towers?

It all depends on the project that you are tagged to , its really hard to get a coding job with 9 years exp.. recently I was working with technical architect an there was lot of coding and tweaking the frame work it was fun .. got released from the project... told workforce manager that i am looking for a technical position.... raised eyebrows..and a question why cant you take up teamlead/manager position with this exp?

but there is hope for you .. in all MNC's in India there are a group well hidden in all vertical and horizontals, they are called "Technical center of excellence" group . as they are non billable ie not payed by the customer their number s are small and they can be seen only when there is a project initiation or when you hit a hard technical issue.
get into an MNC as a team lead/tech lead work on inside connections locate the TCOE team and get in to it this is the easiest way to be in an MNC and continue in technical stream, else you will be pulled into management stream

on Junilu' point there are lot of posts in MNC's designated as architects to please the employees but the real work is that of a senior developer and will overlap other roles like BSA,team lead etc and thus you will be called an architect but all work that comes your way will be that in visio excel and word

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
