I have head first java and SUN CERTIFIED PROGRAMMER FOR JAVA 6 guide. I wanted to know how should i prepare for SCJP 6. Should i complete one book before touching the other or should i study with both the books simultaneously.

Help me asap.

thanks a bunch.

first of all you need to understand that both are seperate books . one book is targeted towards teaching you java while other is targeted for java programmer 6 certification.

which book you should go for depends upon your current knowledge of java . if you are completely new to java then starting with head first java is a good option. it will help you in basics regarding java. what java is , how it came into being. but if you are good in basics , you know what programming is , what OOPS is , what variables, classes, objects, polymorphism etc are then i think you can directly pick a good certification book.

Read Kathy Sierra and Bert Bate's study guide. I suggest you to take OCP 7 instead of 6. Spend at least 6 months (evenings and weekends, about 2 hours a day) to study on the book.

first of all there is no particular time frame set for clearing ocpjp exam. time frame depends upon many factors. depends upon your learning curve, present java knowledge and various other factors. 6 months is not a hard and fast rule.

for ocpjp 7 you need to have a prior certification OCAJ 7 . so keep thing in mind.

please read scjp/ocpjp faq at http://faq.javaranch.com/java/ScjpFaq

One of my friends is new to Java and spend three weeks on that book, he got 96% score.
It depends on how hard you work on it.

I would highly advise you to SearchFirst. Also, please refer official webpages by Oracle for this info - there you can find actual syllabus, voucher price and other things.

I hope this helps.

Did you check Oracle's certification website for India? There's an option in top left corner to change your country - so that you can get local prices for certification.

Actually, it explicitly ask to select the country. Did you select India?

Dear palak,
I advice you to first complete head first java and then take a leap into study guide then it would be easy.
Good Luck
