Hi Edward and Robert,

Is it okay to study KB6 which was published when Sun still owned Java for OCPJP 6 then I write an upgrade to OCPJP 7? I am asking because that is what I have available to me right now.
Your reply will be well appreciated. Thank you.

Before you make a decision, please be aware that the OCPJP 7 Upgrade exam is tough. It is really tough. So if you are thinking of avoiding reading or buying an updated book for the upgrade exam, that may not be such a good idea
But if you do plan on buying a new book anyway, it is ok to study for OCPJP 6 with an existing book and then with the new book for the upgrade.

Hi Charlsy,

I hope I understood your question correctly...

The K&B 6 book is pretty good in terms of studying for the OCA 7 exam. There are also other books available that are focused on the new OCA 7 exam.

BUT, K&B 6 IS NOT enough for the upgrade exam! The upgrade exam includes HUGE new topics that any older book will probably not cover:

- NIO2
- java.util.concurrent
- JDBC

When it's time to study for the upgrade exam, check the table of contents of any material you're thinking of, to make sure those topics are covered!!

hth,

Bert

Thanks for the reply Bert and Paul,

I think i will just read for the OCA 7 using K&B 6 with 95% chances as Bert said and then read a book for OCPJP 7 when it is out.

Doh! I completely forgot about the topic before my exam! So happy it's not scheduled yet!

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
