A Jumpin JForum Day to y'all. That's right. It is now exactly four years since we went live with the JForum software here at the Ranch. You can read about past years features here. To celebrate, we have three shiny new features for you complements of Jeanne, Jaikiran and Andrew respectively.

  • Cows - You can earn cows when a moderator notices you being especially helpful. Check out your profile or posts to see if you have any cows. Or check out the leaderboard to see who has the most cows. I asked our resident cowboy - Ernest Friedman Hill - what he thought about the new feature. He said

Time was, ye could take th' measure of a cowpoke by countin' his heads o' cattle. Now ye kin gather yer own herd of lil' virtual dogies right here at the Ranch! Whene'er y'all are noticed bein' particularly helpful or nice, your herd will grow: check yer profile page ter see. There's a new "Leaderboard" link up top, too, that y'all kin use ter find out who's been acting nicer 'n a polytician on votin' day. And if y'all are a Rancher, you kin help us hand out virtual cows whenever you espy some niceitude, so keep you eyes a'peeled!

  • New look and feel - Four years ago, Ernest noted we had to make JForum "feel comfy, just the way we like it." While the way we like it is old and homey, maybe it is time for a change. We are now offering a preview of our new look. You can try out the beta view to tell us what you think. Right now the beta view is one page (the thread view), but more are coming.
  • Multi forum support - Not sure which forum to put a post in? It can now go in two. For example, this announcement is in both Ranch Office and the new Blog around the Campfire forum. Now if you've been playing close attention, you'll notice this was available before January 3rd. Yup. We snuck it in early to see if y'all would notice. For now, only moderators can put a thread in multiple forums. So just guess which forum is best and mods can add the second one for you.

Contrary to Bart's advice, now it's good to have a cow!

The new format uses a lot of horizontal space that used to be devoted to text and images. For code listings and screen-captures, wider was better.

Although I like the graphic illuminations, anything that uses up screen space at the expense of message content is hard to defend, imho.

(That said, I do think this is the best Java community-support forum there is.)

Hmmm... looks like the new font for postings is also a bit narrower than the old font. That helps with the lost horizontal space, but for my old eyes, it makes it harder to read. That is always a downer for us middle-aged grumps.

Thank you for the feedback! We have received similar feedback from some other users internally and we'll be taking that into account in the next batch of changes that we plan for the view. In fact, this being a beta view is going to help us to collect all the feedback and see which ones can be incorporated for the new look.

So if you and others have any kind of feedback for the new look and feel, please do let us know preferably in a separate thread in this "Ranch Office" forum.
