The error message is the following:
/usr/java/jdk1.7.0_21/bin/java: symbol lookup error: /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_21/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so: undefined symbol: Xutf8TextListToTextProperty

When the tomcat 6 webapp is trying to use xvfb, which is running, to generate an image this error message pops into the stack trace and tomcat chrashes.

Any ideas why this is happening and a solution to it? By the way I'm on a RHEL 5 Server.

Searching for "Xutf8TextListToTextProperty" turned up some rather odd references that are several years old. Are you sure you have the correct current library files?

Hello Bill, I do have the java sdk 1.7 installed and X11 installed via XFree86 rpm for redhat 5. Shall I install a newer version of the X11 package? What libraries are you talking about?
I'm not familiar with java and its dependencies, so I would be very glad to take advise.

So Bill was right. I managed to reproduce the system on a newer debian powered machine. I had to change some code though. It seams that rhel 5 is just too outdated to host a java 1.7, tomcat application. Unfortunately there was no real solution to this error message. I'll have to update the server with a newer linux distribution. rhel 5 seams to from 2002. Thank you and good night from gernamy.
