Well, that's all JavaScript code, so it's unlikely that it's the cause of any JSP exception.

Perhaps you could post the exception?

Heh, I missed the EL expressions in the script (they look a lot like $())...

Not sure why they are not evaluating. If you simplify the page down to just the EL expressions, do they parse? (Determining if it's systemic, or page-specific.)

I assume that not and book are established scoped variables? (Though if they are not, it shouldn't error out.)

My guess would be that it's because "not" is an El keyword - that's what line 55 of the exception indicates.
