I would like to see a purple moosage or an email fired off when someone mentions my name. i have used "@" assuming we would want to allow mentioning only the display names (which can have spaces).

Can't say as I know if there is a plan for this, but I think it is a great idea. Thanks for thinking of ways to make our ranch better. For that: have a cow!

Thanks Steve for the cow. Not sure how cows work though :-).

Is it possible for me to take a look at JForum codebase and see if i can add it to JavaRanch?

No, we're not making the forum code available. Besides, while we are discussing this feature, there is no consensus yet on whether we will actually add it.

On January 3rd, we are adding two features that depend on the # cows you have.

Google likely won't be of much help, as that's a JavaRanch thing. It's possible that we haven't done a good job explaining this feature; maybe we can rectify that when we release the features Jeanne mentioned in a few weeks. Until then you can read some earlier discussions: https://coderanch.com/t/601684/Ranch-Office/Happy-Jumpin-JForum-Day-read, https://coderanch.com/t/602031/Ranch-Office/cow-symbol-means and https://coderanch.com/t/602391/Ranch-Office/cows-powerful.

I'll break the suspense - Google is going to tell you it's a 4 legged animal

Cow in context of our forums, is a kind of award which one earns either because:

1) A very good, helpful or thoroughly thought out post
2) A post which offers genuine suggestions, feedback for the betterment of these forums (like in this specific case)
3) Overall good behaviour over a period of time
4) Some other action which the moderators or those who have the ability to hand out cows, feel deserves more than just a thumbs up.

By the way, a post that earns a cow will trigger a mail notification to the user who earned it and that mail gives a bit of hint on why the cow was awarded.

I am so proud of my cows that I'm considering adding them to my CV as an achievement.
