You usually get involved in a project by participating in the users and developers mailing lists, offering patches and/or documentation, and generally contributing to the course of the project. Which project do you have in mind that you'd like to contribute to?

Another entry: sf.net, they have also help wanted section. If you are interested in development OS Java library for MTP protocol (used for music/video synchronization), then let me know.
