If you are going to just use api attached to Java yours app going to be crossplatform out of the box ;D Most libraries you can find online also gonna work on any platform unless you are about to use os specific features.

Find a copy of the O'Reilly book Java in a Nutshell by David Flanagan and find chapter 7 which has a sectio about portability conventions. At least I think it has. I think that will tell you all the things to avoid which would make your app platform‑specific.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
