As a programmer working at a large company and curious about Java Programming, is the Rational Toolset / Eclipse that we have a good way to learn the basics (and beyond) of Webpshere? Or are the other tools like IntelliJ Idea a better fit (as it does so much of the work for you ) ?

Rational and websphere are designed to work together. I've been uding both of them for at least ten years, without much problems.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
