Hi Jude Niroshan,
First of all, a warm welcome to CodeRanch!

Without any doubt the biggest advantage of using a study guide (for any exam) is that you have a book which bundles everything you need to know to pass the exam. Writing such a book is a very daunting task! In the first place, of course, for the authors. But also a lot of other people put time and effort into this book: graphic designers, technical reviewers, content editors,... I think most study guides are very reasonably priced, certainly in comparison with time and efforts several people put into the making of a study guide (it takes months to write and publish a study guide). Most study guides (I know/used) have an excellent value for money.
If you don't want to purchase a study guide, you'll need to do all this work yourself. I think a good starting point (besides this forum
) are the Oracle tutorials.
But there is also another possibility! Here on the ranch we often do
book promotions. In January we had a promo for
OCA: Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide: Exam 1Z0-808 (by Jeanne Boyarsky & Scott Selikoff). And on March 10 there will be a promo for
Java SE 8 Programmer I: Guide to the Oracle Certified Associate (by Guilherme Silveira & Mário Amaral).
Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Roel
