How is the modelattribute attribute on jsp and modelattribute annonation in controller are used?

How is the modelattribute attribute jsp and modelattribute annonation in controller used ? It looks like we don't need it both the places for application to work. Jsp with modelattribute attribute was enough for to bind the form to controller method argument bean without using modelattribute annotation in the controller. class. Just wanted to know if this is expected behaviour. Please advise.
