In the "old world", we used title/alt to display text information about an image for the vision impaired. I'm assuming that tablets have screenreaders that do the same.

When a sighted user hovered over the element, we saw the text as well which was nice for extra info. (like the holiday moose on this site). Is there an equivalent for touch screen devices now?
