pass credentials to url for authentication using java

Hi. I am new in web applications. there is one url having login screen(userid, password, submit).
Need to pass login credentials to this url and get response if user is valid or not.
Please let me know how to achieve this in java.
I just got the url's jsp page code. not able to authenticate user.
Please guide me how to achieve this.

Since you mention JSP I assume you are using a servlet container. Security can be configured using this container before you decide to build your own. You might want to search for security-related topics posted by Tim Holloway in the past in the JSP, Servlets and Tomcat forums.
