Although you can understand calling bugs bugs because of that occurrence, the name bug makes people think they occur randomly and unexpectedly, whereas they are usually simply mistakes on the part of the programmer.

As you may notice, Ms. Hopper didn't say something like "A bug in the system!"

She said "first actual case of bug being found!"

The term "bug" or "gremlin" goes back to undiscovered times. She, however, holds the honor of actually demonstrating bugs really do exist in systems.

That and being one of the primary inventors of COBOL.

Edison used the term in his speaking and writing way before she did. It is also in an 1892 dictionary.

I do remember a few years ago when the pop media began promoting the story of the term beginning with her... And she did not correct that impression. Did not correct it in the way they ended up editing her at least.
