I am currently making a video tutorial series designed to teach Java at a fundamental level. I have 40+ videos on my YouTube channel with the corresponding tutorials and source code on my website. I am uploading 1-2 new videos each day.
Using an IDE (eclipse - netbeans) is by far the fastest most efficient way to write your Java code - that is - once you know what you are doing.
However, if you really want to master Java then you will need to use a simple text editor and the command line tools; javac to compile and java (JVM) to invoke (run) a class.
