Hi, I'm currently certified with SCJP 1.4, which I aquired a long time back and thought it was a good time to upgrade. I originally bought Jeanne and Scotts OCA Study Guide book and planned to sit for the 1Z0-808 exam. I was then going to purchase the OCP book and sit for the 1Z0-809 exam.

I just realised there is the upgrade exam 1Z0-813 that I can sit instead. I've read through the OCA prep book once already, but wonder if there is any need to keep studying the OCA exam book, or should I just get the new OCP book and study that instead? Does the OCP book cover everything I need to know for the 1Z0-813 upgrade exam?

Hi Brad,

I recommend finishing your read of the OCA book, just to make sure you have all the fundamentals down. For certifications, though, you can take the OCP 8 1Z0-813 upgrade exam. One thing to keep in mind, is this exam includes objectives (carried over from the OCP 7 exam) that are not on the full OCP 8 exam. In fact, Jeanne and I wrote a special appendix in our new OCP 8 book, just to cover those topics found in the 1Z0-813 exam.

Alternatively, you can take the OCA 8, followed by the full OCP 8 exam, although it will obviously cost more. The only advantage of this route would be to get practice taking an easier certification exam, before taking a more difficult one. It also lets you skip the topics added to the upgrade exam.

Whichever path you choose, we wish you the best of luck!
