I have joined for a short term course on Java last week. The syllabus seems to be very tough. Can someone help me to study this language..please share some tips for understanding the basics .

The answer to that question rather depends on what experience you already have.

However, probably the best place to start is the Java tutorials. There are also plenty of good beginner's books around, like this one.

We also have quite an extensive book list on our site that includes reviews and ratings.

What are you having issues with? Do you have specific questions?

Also, don't discount with just pushing on with the course. There was an awful lot at the beginning of my course I only vaguely understood which became clearer as I learned about other concepts.
