I would like to start studying for the Java SE 7 associate exam. I'm wondering if Oracle's site has everything I need to get a good grasp on what will be covered on the exam or am I better off getting a book and studying that?
This is the link I've been studying from but don't want to waste my time if it's not all covered here and would be better off with a certain book. Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There's soooo much information on the Internet it's so easy to get distracted and be led in the wrong direction.

Hello Steve,

It depends on your ability to filter and store information. You can try and get all information from oracle resources, such as class and method descriptions, but you can do it easy way - how the rest of us got certified. Books imho are worth it, as they are much more friendlier to the reader.
Good luck regardless of your choice!

So you're saying that the link I listed above would have all the info I need or I would need to dig through the rest of Oracles tutorials?

What books would you recommend?

Hi Steve, can I know your opinion about why did you choose Java SE 7  associate exam AND not Java SE 8 associate exam as it is the latest associate exam on Oracle.com ?

No real reason I guess. I originally started to study the material from Oracle's site which was SE 7. I didn't see any material on SE 8 till I found this site. Now I'm kinda wondering which one I should go with, SE 7 or SE 8?

Hi Steve -

If you have just started or planning to start with the exam preparation, I would recommend that you opt for OCA Java SE 8 exam. Release of Java ver 9 is round the corner and OCA + OCP Java 8 exams include functional programming, major changes to Collections API and Streams (not included in Java ver 7).

Certification books include curated content, organized for structured exam preparation. They are focused. They cover do's and don'ts for the exam - which is often missing in the Java tutorials or articles (not meant for the certification preparation).

Good Luck to you.

With much respect,
Mala
