this story broke about a week ago. a 4yr old brought a 22 shell casing to school. he had picked it up at a gun range his grandfather, who was a police officer, had brought him to teach him safe gun handling. the school suspended him for 7 days(which his parents still had to pay tuition for) and called child protective services. the school said he brought a bullet to school. an empty shell casing is not a bullet!

When I was a little schoolboy, there was always somebody carrying a spent .22 cartridge case around.

We get stuff wrong all the time.  I can't tell you how often I hear about "poisonous snakes" - that just drives me crazy.  So people mistaking a shell casing for a bullet doesn't surprise me in the least.  I think people are just too lazy to learn the difference.

I think it is more sinister than that. some people don't like the second amendment.

I would actually be one of them.

I'm not a native English speaking person, so I might have misunderstood the opening post.
What is insane? That that kid got suspended, or that a 4 year old kid is learning how to safely handle a gun?

Growing up in a poor inner city neighborhood, with lots of gun violence... although, I don't live in those neighborhoods anymore, I too, would have to whole heartily agree with Fred.

While that is undoubtedly true in general, I think it'd be a stretch to infer that that's the case here: Hanlon's razor

Piet, I think it is insane they suspended him for bringing a harmless piece of brass to school. even worse they called child protective services.
Tim, I don't buy it. I knew the difference between a bullet and a shell casing when I was a child.
I had my own 22 when I was 10 yrs. old.
if I was his parent I would sue.

It's never really that easy. If the school has a code of conduct that they were aware of, on what basis can they sue?  The school will claim they are simply enforcing a known policy.

Granted, anyone can sue for any reason, but on what basis do you think the parents will prevail?

Elephant in the room: has anyone checked the veracity of the story? Or is it just another bit of misinformation spread by the NRA or their ilk to generate false outrage?

Good point. Lots of results when searching for "22 shell casing school suspension", but at the top is a link to breitbart.com - not encouraging.

I did find a few articles, including one posted on my local Fox affiliate's website. It happened in Illinois, but near St. Louis.

Edit - that does't confirm the story, but it's a little more reliable than Breitbart.

well the radio station I listen to is pretty right wing, but they don't make up stories. I'm sure it happened.
how can they have a school policy against carrying a piece of brass in your pocket?
how about a rock? or a leaf? or a coin?
I could hurt someone a lot more with a rock than with a small piece of brass.
you are suspended.
and calling CPS is what really set me off.
they come and take your children and you have to go to court to get them back.
I don't want to get all political here, but come on folks!

It still seems like over-reacting, but apparently, the preschool suspension was based on some prior issues as well ...

Hunter’s parents got a letter from the school’s director saying Hunter had been suspended for 7 days. The letter says they’d repeatedly been reminded about Hunter using other toys as make believe guns, in violation of school policy including Monday, when Jackson picked Hunter up from the preschool, the day before the shell casing incident.

The school’s vice-president told Fox 2 the suspension was for more than the shell casing; that the school was simply following its discipline policy. He said he couldn’t go into further detail, citing confidentiality concerns.

...

The school's vice-president e-mailed her that he was notifying the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).  He confirmed that to Fox 2 but said since A Place 2 Grow was licensed by DCFS, DCFS needed to be notified.

Notice from the school

News story from KTVI (auto-playing video)

Edit: added school notice
