I have been preparing for OCA java 8 since more than 2 months. I am not full time java developer but since I write automation testing scripts, I need to use most core Java concepts. I think I will require 15 more days before I feel ready for OCA 8 exam and after that next step will be OCP 8.

Since OCA exam covers mostly core java concepts and OCP exam covers advanced java concepts + design patterns, how the preparation will be different for students like me who do not need to use advanced Java concepts in day to day work? What will be the difference between OCA 8 and OCP 8 exam preparation?

The OCA 8 exam can sometimes be completed by an experienced Java 8 developers who only review a study guide once or twice.  Some who have passed previous Java certification exams can complete the OCA 8 exam with very little review.

The OCP 8 exam on the other hand... even experienced developers need to spend a lot of time reviewing the material.  The breadth of the material for the OCP 8 is quite large which is why using a study guide is practically required.  We recommend most people read their study guide at least twice before taking this exam.
