Many years ago, you could take the Spring certification without taking a course. This month, Pivotal announced that you can again. The exam is $200 US.. I've updated our Spring Certification FAQ with this info.

Thats a great change- but i am a little sad of my lost money for spring course last september (paid ~600USD at springpeople.com)...
