I'm currently studying OCAJP 8.  It's taking me longer than I thought, I didn't expect it to be so tricky.  I think I'll pass in the next month or two but just realized Java 9 is almost out.  How will that affect me in trying to get OCP certified?  Will OCA 8 work as a prerequisite or am I going to have to take OCA all over again?

It will take months (if not more than a year) after the Java 9 release before certification exams will exist for Java 9. You can't combine different version certifications, so OCA8 is not a valid prerequiste for the OCP9 certification. But if you are OCP8 certified, you can probably take the upgrade exam to become OCP9 certified (cf. the current upgrade exams to become OCP8 certified).

Great, thank you for the info.

Here are some concrete facts and figures related to OCAJP8.

It was released on 18 March 2014, the beta version of the OCAJP8 certification exam was released on 31 August 2014 and the OCAJP8 certification exam was officially released on 10 January 2015.

I suspect the Java 9 exams will be faster to release due to less changes for the exam. But it'll still be a while. java 9 doesn't even release until September (unless it gets delayed again). And there's end of year holidays so I'd be surprised to see the OCA 9 in 2018.

Thanks Jeanne!  Love your book.  First time caller long time listener.

But um, I think you meant you'd be surprised to see it in... 2018?

Thanks for your help everyone.  Makes all the difference.  It's good to know after passing OCA 8, I can study for OCP 8 at my own speed without worry.

The Java 6 cert exam is still available for taking and the Java 5 exams were finally retired this year. The OCA/OCP 8 have a long life ahead of them even after the Java 9 exams come out. Which is a while too.
