I know there are some units which are quantised and some which aren't. So Ruth pointed out yesterday that Mary Berry's lemon drizzle cake recipe includes this classic ingredient:-

1½ large eggs.

The rational numbers are countable, so technically 1½ large eggs is still a discrete amount. :)

Does that mean there is a countably infinite number of different cakes?

No. There is Limburgse vlaai and there is Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. The other cake is a lie.

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte? The imitations of it available in the shops in this country, under the title “Black Forest Gateau”, are anti‑cakes.

You are being nerdish about this. Just use two eggs, measure the weight and throw away a quarter. On Monday I made a birthday cake converting all the American cups, tablespoons and teaspoons to grams, and then a cup of sugar does not even equal of cup of flower.

Saying  "large egg" is as concise as saying "now execute the garbage collector"... oh well...

Ruth did eventually go for ostrich eggs. In view of their size, she used ¾ egg and the cake is 6′ long. 1.8m

We've got some cream, too, so come round between 3.00 and 6.00 and you can have a slice.
