For the curious:
The JavaRanch home page gets about 500 unique users per day. But the overall site gets about 1500 unique users per day.
The overall site gets 55,000 hits a day and moves 8 gigs of data per month.
When I started hosting JavaRanch a few months ago, the cost to host it was $20 a month. Now I'm paying $60 a month. My ISP informed me that I'm exceeding my bandwidth limits and will need to start paying $100 a month for 10 gigs of bandwith per month. I'll probably need to quickly jump to $150 per month for 15 gigs of bandwidth. (this is the part where you are supposed to feel sorry for me )
I may soon be in the market for a new host. Preferably one that supports JSP (my current host promised JSP support and then broke their promise). Anybody know of some high bandwidth hosts with JSP support?
Everybody run over to www.javaranch.com/bunkhouse.html and buy books from amazon through those links!

With this number of hits you may want to add banner ads to the site to pay for it. Now with hits do you mean hits or page views as there is a big difference? Either way the site could probably generate a profit with banner ads. See http://www.burstmedia.com

The daily average for pages is 8000.
Banner ads: I would be okay with some Java related sponsorship - but I don't want to taint JavaRanch with a bunch of non-Java stuff. I would rather just pay the bills and whine a lot.

I have found that whining pays in our industry: "I neeeed a 21 inch monitorrrrrrr." "I have to have Together Jaaaaaaaaay"
I would think they would just say "no" - but along comes the stuff.
No whining, no stuff.

You'll have to send me an *.wav file so I can hear the actual technique in action, so I can practice. I whine all the time, but it just seems to p--- people off!

BTW, thanks for the stats. I agree on the banner ads. Java related products and services and perhaps peripheral items (OO, SQL, ODBC, AS400 )

The old addage "The squeeky wheel gets the grease" has an addendum of "The squeeky wheel gets replaced."
Ya gotta squeek just enough for grease, but not so much that you get replaced.

If you find some kind of banner ad thing that sounds like a fit, let me know.

Actually breaking what you have works for getting better stuff.
The hardware dept trashed my PC (accidentally) a few months ago, the replacement is big improvement!
If I had known it was that easy, I would have arranged an accident a long time ago.

Well, as luck would have it (maybe somebody here did this for me?) I got an e-mail a few minutes ago asking me how much for a banner ad at the top of the home page.
Anybody have any idea how much I should charge?
They directed me to their current banner ad at http://.substance.blackdown.org/ - when I took out the extra dot I actually saw something at http://substance.blackdown.org/ -- so maybe this is for forte at Sun! Wouldn't that be cool!

$6,000,000 / hour
Probably too greedy.
What's the site cost to maintain? Maybe $100 / month would cover expenses. That wouldn't be a bad start.

Well, if I stay with the ISP I have now, I'll soon have to shell out $150 per month (for 15 gigs of bandwidth per month). To go to 30 gigs a month, I'll have to get a dedicated server and they want $450 a month for that. At least then I'll be able to have JSP's.

Banner ads are charged at cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM). Targeted campaigns can go for $15 CPM or more.

Assuming that the home page gets about 750 impressions per day, that would be 22,500 impressions in a month. 22 * 15 is 330. So my offer of $300 per month was fair. Right?
(the server that currently reports hits on the home page is swamped half the time, so I think the home page gets twice as many hits as is reported)

Talk to Craig at RavenCenter...email him at craigb@thedailypitch.com. New service...well has been in the works for a few years and the hardware has all been running with just some friends for clients for a bit, but they are coming on line as we speak. Tell him Lori sent you and he'll probably work a good deal for you! Email me if you want the phone number.
I'm assuming you have access to my email...don't really want to post but will if I need to...

Hi Paul,
As Java Ranch is popular for Java Certification, Java Discussion, Java Tutorials.
In my view one way of gathering funds for the site is to get affiliations from the companies related directly or indirectly to Java.
IBM, COMPAQ, DELL, FLASHLINE, AOL, ATT, CRUELWORLD.COM ( FOR JAVA JOBS), CODEBRAIN, CNET ETC.
You can find all this information at http://www.refer-it.com/
http://www.befree.com/ http://www.linkshare.com/
you can obtain affiliation from IBM at this link
http://commerce.www.ibm.com/content/home/en_US/affiliates/affiliate_overview.html
Even you can contact IBM for example directly for banners ads for fixed rate advertising.
If you need more information feel free to contact me at jahanns@computer.org
Thanks.
Jahan.
