...also spelt Swithun. Bishop of Winchester during some mediaeval century or other. He loved the rain, and arranged to be buried under the eaves where the rainwater falls.
So the legend grew up, which most English schoolchildren know about, that if it rains on St Swithin's day, it will rain for the next forty days.

St Swithin's Day is 15th July: today. It rained.

I remember watching a TV series when I was a kid called Doctor in the House which took place at a (fictional?) hospital named St. Swithin's.

I guess that was named after the same person.

Better invest some money in an umbrella factory, and some travel agencies. But be warned: I also tipped someone just before the corona misery started.

By Richard Gordon, who was an anaesthetist. They say that hospital was inspired by St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London, usually called Bart's. The only memorable character in the film versions was James Robertson Justice as Sir Lancelot Spratt.

Well, to borrow another couple quotes:

- Sir August de Wynter: "A man with an umbrella is a man praying for rain."
- John Steed: "And a man without one is a fool.  Never trust the weather, Sir August.”

That's chiefly because it was a rather loud performance.
It had Dirk Bogarde in it, after all.

It's a bit like saying the only memorable performance in Flash Gordon was Brian Blessed...

That appeared earlier in the Avengers episode called A Surfeit of H₂O, with Diana Rigg as Mrs Peel.

Heh. St. Swithin would have loved Florida. 8cm in the last 3 days. And we don't stop at 40. Normal weather patterns would have it rain almost daily until October. Or later, in recent times.

Since the normal humidity levels here run about 135%, once the weather turns cooler, it all gets dumped out in 4 days or less.

I think the science fiction author Keith Laumer used St. Swithin's day once or twice as a reference in his Retief series. Basically as a minor holiday that only pettifogging diplomats would notice.
