Does the performance come down instead of going up after increasing nodes beyond a point in Hadoop?

In a hadoop cluster, if we increase the number of nodes the performance improves. i,e the execution time taken comes down. However will increasing the number of nodes beyond a point lead to the execution time going up instead of down? If so , why?
