Hi there,

I have just taken the exam (1Z0-819-J) and unfortunately I failed. This was not totally unexpected, but still a bummer.

More interesting I got two concepts in the exam I can not find in the exam preparation book (OCP Java SE 11 Developer Complete Study Guide).

The first one was FileChannel. I had never heard of it and thought it was a trick question. Unfortunately it does exist, but I cannot find it in the book.

The second one was a method setNull on PreparedStatement. Also something I cannot find in the mentioned book.

I also checked this page:

https://www.selikoff.net/ocp11-819/

But this page does not mention them either.

So please be aware of these two topics.

Best regards,

Sorry to hear that you failed to pass the exam. It is a tough exam, so, don't lose heart. You will surely pass next time.

Thanks a lot for your feedback on the exam. A few other people also reported getting questions on FileChannel and setNull. Although FileChannel may be out of scope (and it might be an unscored question), the setNull method of PreparedStatement is squarely within scope.

We tweeted about it as well as updated our question bank last week to include questions on these topics.

(Post updated to fix grammatical mistake.)

Hi,

Could you please provide more information regarding exam. Which type of questions were asked and which topics were majorly covered?

Hi, I took the exam 1Z0-819-J recently and I can confirm that both concepts were in the exam. I meant to share this but forgot.
So I don't know about FileChannel (I hate IO stuff and cannot force it in my head so I just ignored it).

But this setNull was something I stumbled upon and was not prepared for (I have the Selikoff/Boyarsky book). So yeah, watch for it. I prepared for the upgrade exam, but since the J exam is cheaper decided to give it a go.
I passed but nothing to write home about Hope you will have more luck next time!

I ran out of time, so I just guessed two or three questions...

Hello, do you guys find the questions in the Study Guide book more difficult than the questions on the exam? Putting aside that the book does not mention how many answers are valid.

Thanks for sharing.

I found the questions in the Study Guide more difficult than the questions on the exam. The exam has less answers options (mostly four or five options). Furthermore the exam uses the does-not-compile-option less. So you have to spend less time searching for compilation errors. On the other hand the exam had less code-less questions. Almost every question contained a piece of code you have to interpret. All things considered my failed exam score was the highest I got so far. 😊

Yeah, the questions in the real exam are not so difficult. Or at least, they don't have the options on which you can waste a lot of time.

Thank you for your feedback!
Did you prepared just with a book or also used some mock tests ?

I used te follwing things to prepare:
- a 30 hour video Oracle provides with the 25 year of Java action
- OCP Java SE 11 Developer Study Guide
- tests from the book above
- tests from OCP Java SE 11 Practice Tests
- Enthuware

The first one was unfortunately a waste of my time. It does not contain enough depth to prepare you for the exam. All other mentioned sources are awesome and highly recommended.

Just gave my exam yesterday evening. Had a question on FileChannel. It was quite simple though. How to create an instance of FileChannel from an ObjectInputStream.

Look! I laid an egg! Why does it smell like that? Tiny ad, does this smell weird to you?
