Configuring security roles : groups

According to the J2EE spec, the 'deployer' is responsible for configuring the application in the production environment, including mapping security roles defined by the app assembler to existing user groups (in applicaiton.xml).
But the app assembler creates the EAR file (which contains the application.xml file).
How does the Deployer amend the application.xml file? Could someone describe to me how this is done in the admin console?
Thanks in advance,
Louise

The mapping happens at deploy time. Roles are mapped to methods at asssembly time. The users and groups are kept in the binding file at the EAR level which can be modified at deployment time.
