I'm taking a cruise that will visit Amsterdam several times and am looking for some ideas on restaurants.
I have visited Amsterdam several times before and have usually gone to Indonesian restaurants for the Rice table.
This time I'd like to try something different.  What are typical Dutch dishes that would be available in a local restaurant?
And what are the names and locations of some of those restaurants?
Thanks,
Norm

Nothing. At least not the last time I went to Amsterdam, which was twenty years ago. Every other Dutch town, city, village, hamlet, has an Eetcafe where you can get traditional Dutch dinners, which are actually rather similar to what is traditionally eaten in adjacent parts of England, Germany, etc. But not Amsterdam. It is too cosmopolitan for that. It is easy enough however to get a train out of the city to somewhere like Haarlem (about 20 miles away, and well worth a visit) and find at Eetcafe. You can get a decent dinner for about €15, which is under $20. Or less.

Yes, but I shall leave it here until somebody else moves it.
Staff note (Paul Clapham) :

So moved.

Pommes frites with mayonnaise?

I once was subjected to quite the tirade from a Belgian ex-pat who was offended by the concept of "Belgian waffles".

That's Belgium you are thinking of.

They have mayonnaise on just about everything in Belgium.

But it's not even Tuesday!

I go through a lot of mayo myself, but the chips get red sauce: Ketchup, BBQ, HP, hot pepper, even sometimes gojuchang. Gravy if I could get poutine.

I'd take mayonnaise if none of the above were available, but it's just not as exciting when you're pairing it with potatoes.

They have multiple grades and colours and flavours of mayonnaise.

And to MD this thread goes O, I see it's already been moved.

Eggs, oil, a dash of mustard and lemon juice. After that, as far as I'm concerned, it's like "flavoured coffee".

Nothing wrong with chipotle, wasabe, aoli, stuff like that, but I don't expect to find anything other than plain mayo in anywhere that doesn't slap it on before they serve it, and I don't keep it in stock because too many other sauces in the fridge.

At least you have to order the type of sauce with the “frites”.
