I  wrote a similar thread in the forum that I got to from "This Tiny Ad" .    I just read my post five months later and it didn't seem to be clear.  The previous posts were talking about feature ideas so I added a feature I would like.  I think I was off topic so I'll post it more clearly here.

I think that the bookmark feature works at the thread level.   I want the bookmark to also be at the individual post level.   There are threads with 30 posts and one of them has the information that I know that I will need to return to.

Maybe there is a better location on the Ranch to be asking for this.

Thanks,

Kevin

On the desktop view there's a teeny folder icon next to the "posted 1 hour ago" that is a link to the post within the topic.

It's not super obvious, but it's there.

Actually, I see what I think you really mean. I'm talking about accessing a permalink that you can bookmark in your browser or whatever tool you use to keep links to interesting things. You're talking about bookmarking within coderanch? Yes I believe that would be a feature request.

I like the idea of adding more features to the PIE stuff.  But first I need to understand the idea.

Paul and Tim,

Thank you for taking the time to understand and consider my idea.

This is my favorite site.  I'm learning Java as a hobby and I would have stopped learning Java if it wasn't for the wonderful people who answer my questions.   My friend,  Jeanne Boyarsky, told me about this site several years ago.  She is one of the hikers in the NYC Hiking group I started around 20 years ago.  Then I worked at her bank for around 18 months.  Jeanne introduced me to the Ranch or I might have never known about it.

I can't get to the save as bookmark button while writing a post.  I need to send this now and start a new post.

Best,

Kevin

Start Scenario

I am reading Tim's last post.  It was the 20th post in the thread.   He mentioned the Topic BigDecimal and I never heard of it before.  I want to be able to get back to this specific post later.
I could get the thread and save it outside of the Ranch.   I'd rather have a way to get back to it from inside the Ranch.

I can use the Save Bookmark oval button at the top of the screen.  It saves the entire the entire thread but not granular to the post.

End Scenario

I could use the Description field and give the Description and include more information such as saying BigDecimal --  12 posts down.

Maybe It would be better if there was another entry box that says post number or maybe a choice of 1) entire post or 2) The post you are reading

Many advanced programmers explain topics when I ask a question.   Sometimes there is a key piece of information in a specific  post that I want to find again later.  It could be a description of the difference between Comparator and Comparable 9 posts into the thread.   Maybe it tells what a static method is on the 23rd post in the thread.   I know that I'll need to go back to it later.  If I can remember some exact text in the post i can use the find feature, but If I search for Comparable it will return many hits and I have to hope I pick the right one to get back to the detail I need.

It's not really important, but I'd like a cancel button on the Insert Bookmark pop up window.   Now I press  save and then find the bookmark on the ranch and delete it.  i attached the window that I'm writing about.

It must be a rough weekend for Turkeys on the Ranch this weekend.

Happy Turkey Weekend!

Typically one uses the <a> anchor tag to jump to a specific area on a specific page. That would be easy enough to set up.

It can be a bit sticky if the thread spans more than one page, though.

I didn't notice that the bookmark pop up window has a window frame with an X in the upper right hand corner to close it.  A cancel button is not needed.

I don't know about this or how to use them:

Typically one uses the <a> anchor tag .

It might be what I'm looking for, but I don't know how to use it.
