Try clicking the “watch settings” button above the threasd.
Whenever you post a new post, there is a tick‑box below the edit window saying, “Notify when a reply is posted.” Click that.

There are lots of great Java open source projects. I generally advise to work on something that you actually care about because you use and like it. Makes it much more likely that you will stay engaged over the long run, IMO.
