Well, it looks like IBM just might release something called WebSphere 7?

They're allowing you to download the beta WebSphere 7 Application Server. JEE? EJB3.0? JSR286? Who knows?

Looks like I've got some work to do this week:

IBM WebSphere Application Server V7 Beta expands on previous versions with:

* Enhanced Java and Web services standards
* Improved user experience and simplified administration
* More flexible systems management options

IBM WebSphere Application Server V7 Beta key capabilities

* WS-Policy support (not all configurations are supported in the beta release, refer to the documentation for details)
* Java EE 5 support, including Web services enhancements and Enterprise Java Beans 3.0 support
* Optional components for implementing a more flexible, scalable, and asynchronous administrative topology
* Improved user experience and systems management features, including:
o Centralized Installation Manager (CIM) - provides support for installation of product and product maintenance to remote machines
o Properties-file-based configuration tool
o Expanded command assistance in the administrative console
o Administrative script library
o "Business-level applications" for managing several related artifacts as a combined unit
* New Runtime Provisioning Service that commissions only those components that are required for a given set of applications
* Security enhancements, including:
o Kerberos authentication and single sign-on
o Fine-grained access control
o Enhanced auditing features
o Support for multiple security domains

IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V7.0 Beta Open

I did notice in the supported platforms that Microsoft Vistawas not supported. Another blow to Microsoft's latest operating system.

I think most of the deployment would be on Enterprise servers and not in desktops. Vista is mainly a desktop OS.

True. But the RAD/RSA 7 beta has the same OS requirements. And an IDE is primarily a desktop tool.

I've been running RSA 7 on Vista for over a year now and haven't had any problems with it or the WAS 6.1 test environment that comes with it. There's a big difference between "not officially supported" and "just plain doesn't work".

Also, the RAD 7.5 trial that is the IDE used for WAS 7 clearly states that it does support the "Windows Vista Family".

Hi Merrill,
I've been "using" RAD 7.0.0 under Vista Business since January and have had numerous problems, especially frequent "(Not responding)" followed by termination.

The main problem is that I haven't been able to install any maintenance - it gets part way thru the install and dies with what appears to be a permissions-related problem. My account has admin authority.

In case it matters, I am using a license provided to me by a company for whocm I do occasional development. Obviously my id is not the same as that of the license holder, but I have been able to access and download both 7.0. and the updates. It's when I try to apply them that it fails. (BTW, I had the exactly same problem with RAD 6.)

Have you been able to apply maintenance? If so, how? Did you have to tweak something related to permissions?

Thanks!

For my next feat, I will require a volunteer from the audience! Perhaps this tiny ad?
