Ok, am not a database guy, but am having a problem with a parameter in my init.ora file. The parameter is QUERY_REWRITE_ENABLED. If I set it to true, which I need so oracle knows about hints. I get this error: java.sql.SQLException: No more data to read from socket

Compiled Code)
I have downloaded the latest JDBC drivers, and that didnt help.
Help is greatly appreciated!

Are you sure that it is because of that init.ora parameter. It looks like it has something to do with the connection. Is the connection getting closed in between? What is the JDBC driver you are using and what is the database version?

The drivers are the latest drivers that Oracle has out thier. The DB version is 8.1.7.
Thanks for you reply.
It make no sense that when I take out this parameter the call to the function works fine.

How about this?

Bug 1528882 Fixed: 8.1.7.1
Hangs / Spins
High parse times are possible for queries with long OR chains if
query_rewrite_enabled is set to true.

Perhaps this is happening, and your query times out?

That could be right!
I tried to test this with my 8.1.7.4 (installed the 8.1.7.4 patch set yesterday) database (which has bfiles) and couldn't duplicate the problem.

Well, I ended up creating a TAR with Oracle. Their solution was to upgrade to 8.1.7.4. Thanks for the input guys.
