Hats off to Belgium, who played very well against the US. Given how Argentina has played so far, I think they have a good chance of reaching the semifinals.

And in semi-related news, A Primer on Match Fixing in the Wake of the Cameroon World Cup Allegations.

If Belgium wins from Argentina, and Netherlands wins from Costa Rica, it's going to be Belgium against Netherlands in the semi-finals!

We usually have more rivalry with the Germans, but both BE and NL will be on their heads when it comes to this.

I hope Brazil wins against Colombia, because then we'll work only in the morning (at least in the company I work for) on July 8th (semi-final), here in Brazil.

Looking at the situation at the moment, it probably might be a Netherlands vs Germany for the finals. Looking like another European tournament.

Horrified by the play of Colombia and Brazil yesterday. Neymar out... Shame for football. I'm hoping for a Belgium vs the Netherlands semi-final.

Referee never controlled the Brazil / Colombia match - too many unpunished fouls...

Still backing Argentina to win. Germany look like a good team, but I've seen them play boring [winning] football.
Shame about Neymar, Brazil will miss him.

Semi Finals;
Brazil Vrs Germany
Argentina Vrs Netherlands

Final;
Argentina Vrs Germany

Not yet satisfied, they have scored their 6th.

Awful show by the home team to put it mildly. As the commentator nicely put it together - Brazil is blown to smithereens.

I checked Google's FIFA 2014 and it was 1-0 Germany. No big deal. I came over here and cleaned up some spam posts. Just before going out to do some work in the garden I checked FIFA again and it was 5-0! I was (here's a good British word which the Americans should pick up) gobsmacked!

I think Brazil went too far, actually. Against Chile we almost lost and the team has not been playing a good match since the first game, on this Cup. Without Thiago Silva and Neymar, Brazil became a regular team. Germany has many experienced players who are working together since 2006. I think Brazil has a lot to learn with Germany and what happened today.

So...if the Netherlands do win the cup, they'll have had to beat the three teams that have beaten them in World Cup Finals before. I imagine that would be satisfying.

If.

Look on the bright side. It stopped you losing to Germany in the final .

I'm trying to work out what I'd have done if I'd been given the choice between England going out as they did, or making it to the semi-final and losing 7-1. The latter would be much more traumatic.

I think Van Gaal should have replaced the goalkeeper like he did in Netherlands vs Costa Rica (very easy to say now, when the game is over )

The NL had already made 3 substitutions, otherwise I think he might have.

Matthew Brown wrote:England ... making it to the semi-final

That would have much reduced pre-game jitters over here, as there's no conceivable way Germany could have lost to England

The thing is, apparently Tim Krul's penalty saving record is nothing special. Journalists that I've read speculated that it was a psychological ploy - by bringing him on like that the Costa Rican's would assume he was a specialist, which would damage their confidence. Which makes it less likely that it would work a second time, even if he'd had a substitution left.

So who will it be today? I would want Argentina to win, but looking at the way the Germany are playing I can't say for sure if Argentina has a chance!

Not the best match ever, but quite a nailbiter. A fair result, too, I should say, as the Argentinian side seemed physically exhausted after about 70 minutes, from then on it was mostly Germany in the offense. Although Messi did create some dangerous situations, it was clear that he alone is not enough - they were sorely missing Di Maria to play along with him.

Argentina had a couple of very very good chances and they failed to make it. They were mostly defensive in their approach. Germany deserved to win the title.

Look how Julio Cesar (Brazil's goalkeeper) works at semifinal (Germany 7 vs 1 Brazil):

Congrats Ulf!

It was quite a clear match tactically, Argentina had the upper hand but forgot to score, and Germany had the most stamina. Löw made a bad decision not letting Schürrle start, but it was eventually rectified for him by Kramer's injury. Maybe it was even better, because it left him fresher for the extra time. But Argentina should've made the difference long before that.

Still don't understand, after 30 years of everyone agreeing Schumacher shouldn't 've played a game of football in his life after the Schumacher-Battiston incident, Neuer didn't see a red card and a penalty against in the Higuain incident. I'm just happy it was Higuain and not Messi, or Messi's career would've been over I guess.
