definitions of Key terms in Oracle AS

I guess I am comming to a saturation point researching on Oracle 10g AS.

Can anyone please shed light on me about these key terms.

- Middle Tier
- Cluster
- Instance
- Island
- Infrastructure

What each term mean and what role they play??

Here are the some of the definition I found in the following article.

Oracle Application Server 10g Architecture and Administration


Unfortuantely I could not see any of the figures/pictures in the article.
I guess if I have seen in the pictorial format, I would have understood more better.

Instances -- An instance is defined as a collection of processes required to run a component within an application server instance.
An instance is made up of one or more Java containers and the structure needed to support them.
The Application Server 10g Infrastructure is an instance with a supporting database to store metadata.

Clusters -- A cluster is an arbitrary collection of instances that are part
of the same farm and also share a common configuration and J2EE applications.

Farms -- A farm is a collection of instances and clusters that make up your
Application Server 10g system and share a common repository infrastructure

Metadata repository (Infrastructure) -- This critical component is sometimes referred to as the Infrastructure.
It stores Application Server 10g metadata and allows for a common management interface
between multiple instances of Application Server 10g and its other components

I am looking more into this architecture bcoz I am working on configuring Oracle 10g AS within Jbuilder.
And when I start my app server from Jbuilder I see these warnings.

I wanted to understand more abt the server inorder to understand these warnings.

I would appreciate if anyone could help in getting rid of these warnings

Saritha,
Good article. As to your warning message, you may want to try deleting the contents of that file (make a copy first.) Sometimes that message appears if a previous transaction failed.

Thanks Jeanne,

I have made a copy of transaction.state fine and removed all contents from the original file.

I have tried to start app server from Jbuilder X.
I get same warning.

When I look at transaction.state file, it has been updated with some encrypted text and when I compared this text with that of copied transaction.state file. Both the contents are same.

This means Jbuilder is tying to update this file.

I am not sure where I am going wrong

did anyone came across same problem??

That's good. It rules out a more obscure problem.

Does your app do anything on startup? In particular does the web.xml load anything on startup that access an EJB or database?

My application is just a sample application with Jsp, EJB to set the plug-in.

It does not contain any startup files and no database transactions at all.

I have a simple Jsp that displays string by making a request onto the EJB.

1. JSP talk to Java class to get String
2. Java class looks for EJB and calls a method on EJB to get the String which is hardcoded in EJB
3. Java class returns the String to JSP which is rendered onto web page.

When I try to run same .ear file by manually deploying onto the application through enterprise manager, I am able to see the String onto the webpage.

This is what I have noticed when I deploy application from JBuilder.

1. When http-web-site is being given as value for "web site name" deployment attribute, I notice that there is entry for this web site is being made into the http-web-site.xml file. I have manually added that entry and tried to test the application from both Jbuilder and from internet explorer. I get "page cannot be found" displayed in internet explorer and "unable to connect" in Jbuilder web view.

2. When default-web-site is being given as value for "web site name" deployment value, I notice that entry for this web site is being made in the default-web-site.xml file. But still when I run my application same result.

3. When I try to undeploy application that has been deployed from Jbuilder, I get error message saying application information cannot be found. Does this mean that the oracle AS plugin which is deploying .ear file is not updating the required xml files.

I don't see any special instructions that need to be taken care of

The reason for asking here is , i'm able to deploy a bean & access it from a stand alone client in weblogic. But i face may problems, to access the bean ( thru a stand alone client )in 10G app server and so asked here..

What error are you getting when you try the client in OAS?

This exception i got when i used the following url in Jndi.properties file

java.naming.provider.url=ormi://10.80.3.131:3201

And this exception i got when i used the following url in Jndi.properties file

java.naming.provider.url=ormi://10.80.3.131:3202/CMS
Where "CMS" is the Application name in which the bean is deployed.
This "CMS" is inside the Oc4J instance named "cms_dev"

C:\>java loginClient.HelloClient
client started...
Got The Context
NamingException: Lookup error: javax.naming.AuthenticationException: No such domain/application: CMS; nested exception is:
        javax.naming.AuthenticationException: No such domain/application: CMS
  

But normally i have read in many 10g documentation's that the default ormi port is "23791" but i'm able to see that no services are running in this port. Do i need to set any configuration in my server ?
Please help me in this.
But one thing, i'm able to access this bean from a jsp or a servlet since both are in the same container.
