"Smoke testing" just means to start something up and see if it seems to work. When you "smoke test" a hardware prototype, you plug it in and turn it on and see if any smoke comes out -- that's where the term comes from. It's just a very crude application-level test.

Then what is the difference between "Smoke Test" and "Sanity Checking"?
Are they refer to the same concept?

They could refer to the same thing. It really depends on who's saying it and what he means with those words.

Personally, I'd say that smoke tests are sanity checks but sanity checks are not necessarily smoke tests.

By the way, Siva, please take a moment to check out our naming policy and then proceed to your profile to change your display name into something that complies with policy.

Thanks.

Hi,
I saw your Naming policy. I was having my Diplay name before with my Last name "P.Siva", now I removed that Last name & Made it as "Siva". I think it is fine or it has to be changed.

Thanks,
Siva.

Yes, you do need to change it.

The naming policy requires a first name and a lastname (just "Siva" won't do). Initials (like "L. Koskela" instead of "Lasse Koskela") are tolerated, although a full name would be preferable.

Thanks.

Thanks for your Suggestion. I have changed My display name to my Full name itself. I think this will resolve this Issue.

Thanks,
Siva.

I love that explanation. Actually I was also looking for an easy-to-understand definition for Smoke Testing. Thanks millions EFH.
