I came across this nice looking UML diagramming and design tool - 100% Java and open-source.
Argo UML design tool home page
It is packaged as a Java Web Start program - the first one I have downloaded. Very elegant way to handle installation, Sun has a winner.
Anybody else have experience with this tool?

I am just evaluating it these days. It seems nice but there are still some problems (memory greedy) and some features are missing, but the essentials are there. And when you see the license fees for some tools which hardly do more (no name here ), it is at least worth trying it.
Anyway, I think ArgoUML is an excellent and simple tool to translate your ideas into UML diagrams, and sufficient in most situtations where a UML conception tool is needed.

Other UML tools that I have tried and appear to work well:
Poseidon, an ArgoUML based UML tool
Visual Paradigm for UML
Both of the above tools are Java Web Start based and work well.
For the most part, however, I use UML Pad which is a small, quick, Windows based UML editor. It is not as robust as the above two, but it does get the job done.

I tried to run ArgoUML from Web-start and it came up with a message saying the program was requesting unrestricted system access and that it was strongly recommended not to run it. I didn't. But is this normal? Is it OK?
Thanks

I got a message like that - something about the certificate not matching. Since I had recently done a full backup I gritted my teeth and proceeded anyway. NOT something I would advise anybody to do. I sent email to the author asking what was going on but never got an answer.

In my experience, people using certificate technology non-commercially sometimes don't buy a certificate that can be verified with a commerical certifier. In that case, I would expect web-start to warn you that the certificate cannot be verified, and hence that webstart cannot assure you that it knows the code comes from whoever it says it comes from. So as far as webstat knows, the program may not be friendly, and hence unsafe to run outside the sandbox. Of course, any program that access local files must run outside the sandbox.
