I am new to JSF framework and would like to know if there is any book which is good for JSF.
My datasource has been mentioned properly. Do I have to mention that it is on the localhost? My database name is Part6. Do I have to download the drivers seperately or do they come with the database server itself?
This is the program and I am trying to connect to MS Access database.

import java.sql.*;

class jdbcDemo
{
public static void main(String args[])
{
try
{
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
String url="jdbc:odbc:Part6";
Connection con=DriverManager.getConnection(url);
Statement stmt;
stmt=con.createStatement();
ResultSet rs=stmt.executeQuery("SELECT Auth_ID, Auth_Name FROM AUTHOR_t");

while(rs.next())
{
int i=rs.getInt(1);
String name=rs.getString(2);
System.out.println("Name="+name);

}

stmt.close();
con.close();
}
catch(Exception e)
{
e.printStackTrace();
}
}

}

The Exception I am getting when I am running the program is

java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not fou
nd and no default driver specified

What is the difference between Batch Updates and Distributed Transaction? Isn't that both work on different databases simultaneously.
I am new to j2ee and when I am trying to compile jsp page, I am getting following error

tests.web.AllJSPsMustBeCompilable

Has this got anything to do with proper downloading of j2ee version.

I had a jdk1.3 and I have upgraded it to j2ee platform. I am trying to find whether the version has been upgraded or not. I have used java -version statement and it gave me a result which says something like this....

java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode)

Can you please tell me from the above statements whether my java is upgraded and is it a j2ee platform?

I have used java-version statment but it gives me an error message as follows
'java-version' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

How can I know which version of java SDK is running on my system? If I have jdk1.3.1, is this version ok to run j2ee application if we install just the application server or do we have to install 1.4.2_06 or higher?

In the java tutorial, there are some statments like
<INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/example/common/build.properties
What is this statement and where do you use this?

Thanks

I am confused about pass by value and pass by refernce in java as some texts uses pass-by-refernce when objects refernces are passed to the methods and some texts say that pass-by-refernce does not exist in java and it is just the pass by value that exists and the same is used by the object refernce.

What is the default value for an object refernce. Is the null a default value for these refernce variables. What if an object is instantiated and it has no constrcutor... Is the default value null?

When you use that refernce varaible to the left of instanceof operator with the Object on the right side of the operator. Will it produce false?

what I am asking is, can i access the proected member in class C in package b without extending class B?

what if i make class C extend class B? Will i be able access the protected member of class A which inturn is extended by class B?

What I am trying to say is that, if there is class A in package 'a' and it has a protected member variable.

package a;
class A
{
protected int a;
}

I have one more class B which is in a differnt package called b and it extends class A in package a. The proected member of class A, does it become private member to class B when it is extended or it remains protected?

Now can a class C in package b can access it without subcalling it?
