I am trying to deploy a cmp bean using J2EE SDK that comes with the Derby database. However, I don't know how to use Derby database to create some tables and do some SQL. I try the db.apache.org/derby site but
I got completely lost. Can some good guys out there help me with this: After installing J2EESDK how do I start the console or window so I can do some quick Derby SQL tutorial and where to get the Derby SQL tutorial ?
What is the default user name and password for Derby ?

Thank you
Thanks Jeanne for your prompt reply. But how do I know I suppose to run the client using a command like that ? Is there anywhere I can find out more about how I should run the command. By the way, what do you mean by "This is something like JBoss"

Thanks again Jeanne
I bought a J2EE book recently. Book titled Beginning J2EE 1.4 From Novice To Professional By James L.Weaver,Kevin Mukhar, and Jim Crume

I try to run the example for session bean. After deploying the bean,I have to run the following at command prompt

java -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialHost=localhost -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialPort=3700 client.SimpleSessionClient now is the time

Does anyone know what is -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialHost=localhost or -Dorg.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialPort=3700 ?
Thanks Joe. I got the documentation from sun site. It is helpful.

Thanks Joe for your quick reply. What about those other tools such as beanreg.dll , orbd , jdb and etc. Any of them has something to do with XML application. Has jdb something to do with database ? May be java database.

Dear All,

What are these tools in the Jdk bin directory ? Does anyone knows how to use them ? Where can I get a manual that can tell me how to use them ?
Are rmic, rmid and rmiregistry for rmi programming. How do I use them

Thanks Wei and Nelson, I have successfully access Microsoft Access DB in my JSP page without having to put the driver in the lib or classes directory.

However,Nelson I don't know how to change rt.jar to rt.zip. I try to rename it to rt.zip it became rt.zip.jar.

Also Wei I am not sure what you mean by the following :

"jdbc:odbc:DRIVER=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); "
+"DBQ="+database+"; "
+"ImplicitCommitSync=Yes; "
+"UserCommitSync=Yes; "
+"Threads=3; "
+"SafeTransactions=0; "
+"PageTimeout=5; "
+"MaxScanRows=8; "
+"MaxBufferSize=2048; "
+"DriverId=281; "
+"DefaultDir=C:/Program Files/Common Files/ODBC/Data Sources"

Can you guys give a bit more clue on this ?

Thanks again for your help.
Thanks Nelson and Wei.
I have extracted the rt.jar and found the JdbcOdbcDriver.class file. Can I just copy this file into the WEB-INF/classes directory.

Wei, I have browse to the site at www.hxtt.com but it looks like I have to pay to get the driver. Wei, I am not sure what you meant by
" If you use free jdbc-odbc bridge driver, you needn't to set WEB-INF/lib, but your web host should be Windows OS "
Do you mean if I run Tomcat on windows XP than I don't need to put the driver jar file in the lib directory.
Q1 : I am trying to create a quick demo using JSP to access database. I am using Microsoft Access. I know that I need to put the driver jar file in the WEB-INF/lib directory. Where can I get the driver jar file or the driver class file for Microsoft Access ? If I have the driver class file where should I put it.

Q2 : It is said that sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver is included in the JDK but where is it included. Is there anyway that I can see it in the hard drive after I install the JDK.
Thanks Ernest. This question is a continuation of an earlier thread on
Sep 23rd. It was Barry Gaunt and Praveen Babu answering my question.
My question is that if I do set in the command prompt I can see

Path=C:\WINDOWS\System32;C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\bin

But I can't see C:\WINDOWS\System32 as path value if I go to the System Properties -> Environment Variables window. I only see C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\bin. Why is that ? How can I remove
the path value C:\WINDOWS\System32 if I can't see it in the
System Properties -> Environment Variables window. The java.exe file is in this folder.

Hi Barry and Praveen. Thanks for your help. I have been out of town for a few days. In case you guys don't see it I bring the topic to the front.
I have done a search on my entire hard disk and I found the java.exe that caused the problem. It is in the C:\WINDOWS\System32. But the problem is I don't know how to remove the path. I can only see the path value

Path=C:\WINDOWS\System32;C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\bin

when I do set in the command prompt. But I can't see C:\WINDOWS\System32 if I go to the System Properties -> Environment Variables window. I only see C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\bin. Why is that ? And I don't know why the java.exe file sitting in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 for. Can you guys explain ?

Thanks Barry,

This all I have in the Sun\AppServer\bin but there is no java.exe. What is

Thank you Praveen. How can the JRE is in effect when there is no JRE 1.5 seen in the path above ?
Thanks to Barry, Praveen and Joe. It is Oracle causing the problem.
However, there is still one mystery remains. In some computers of the
same lab I get jdk 1.5 version when I do java -version. But the problem
is that the path variable was never set to JDK 1.5. and I have remove the path to Oracle

This what I get when I do set:

C:\Documents and Settings\user>java -version
java version "1.5.0_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_05-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_05-b05, mixed mode, sharing)

Can you guys take a look for me.
Thanks Keith and John.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my path variable. When I type set I see everything I set in the system properties. However when I type java -version, I still get jdk 1.3 version. The most amazing thing is jdk1.3 was never installed in this computer. And also some computers in the same lab has no path variable=jdk1.5 version and when I type java -version I get jdk 1.5. I originally suspect the NetBean or sjsas installed cause the problem but then every computer in the lab has exactly the same thing installed in it by the same person.

I try John's method by typing set classpath=jdkHOME and path=jdkBIN dir before I run the program. It works OK. I can compile and run the program using jdk 1.5 version and I see jdk 1.5 when I type java -version.

The problem now is I cannot set the path environment variable using the system properties window. I have to type set classpath=jdkHOME and path=jdkBIN everytime I want to run my program.
By the way I am using WinXP professional

This is what I get when I type set. Obviously the path value has C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08\bin
